Description Mode of action:
This glycine-rich peptide antibiotic inhibits DNA replication in many enteric bacteria, that leads to induction of the SOS repair system, massive DNA degradation and cell death. B17 inhibits type II topoisomerase by trapping an enzyme - DNA cleavable complex.

post-translational modification:
The processed N-terminus does not resemble a typical secretion signal sequence.

The Cys residues as well as some Gly and Ser are post- translationally modified. Modifications include the formation of four thiazole and four oxazole rings that result, respectively, from the condensation of four cysteine and four serine side chains with the carbonyl group of the preceding amino acid.
